Is Chiniot Furniture Worth the Price? An Honest Cost-per-Year Answer
Genuine Chiniot furniture costs more up front, but lasts decades longer than board or unseasoned wood. The cost-per-year maths, and the cases where it is not worth it.

Short answer: yes — if it is genuine. Hand-carved, kiln-seasoned solid Sheesham furniture from Chiniot typically costs two to four times as much as factory board furniture, but it lasts thirty years or more and can be repaired, while board furniture usually lasts five to eight. Per year of use, genuine Chiniot furniture is often the cheaper choice. It is not worth it if the "Chiniot" piece is machine-carved on MDF, or if you plan to replace it in a few years anyway.
The cost-per-year comparison
Take a bedroom set as an example. The figures are illustrative ranges, not quotes:
- Veneered MDF bedroom set — around Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh, typically five to eight years before swelling edges, chipped veneer or loose cam locks. Roughly Rs 15,000 to 25,000 per year.
- Solid Sheesham Chiniot bedroom set — around Rs 4 to 5 lakh, thirty years or more with a polish twice a year. Roughly Rs 13,000 to 16,000 per year, and still a usable, repairable set at the end.
The longer you keep it, the wider the gap becomes — and carved Sheesham pieces handed down from a previous generation are a common sight in Pakistani homes.
What you are actually paying for
- Timber — solid Sheesham, dense and priced by the cubic foot
- Seasoning — kiln-drying to 8 to 12 percent moisture, so it does not crack
- Hand carving — weeks of skilled labour on a single headboard or sofa frame
- Joinery — mortise and tenon that can be opened and re-glued
- Finishing — a hand-rubbed polish that ages rather than peels
The carved look can be copied cheaply. These five cannot.
When Chiniot furniture is worth it
- You own your home or move rarely
- You want a bedroom, dining or sitting room set to last decades
- You value repairability over replacement
- The piece will be a wedding set or a family heirloom
When it is not worth it
- You rent short-term and move often. Heavy solid wood is expensive to move repeatedly.
- You want to change style every few years. Buy lighter, cheaper pieces.
- The price looks too good. A hand-carved Chinioti set at factory prices is almost always machine-cut on board or soft wood, and you pay premium for a non-premium product.
- Children's rooms that will be redone in five years.
Does Chiniot furniture hold its value?
Genuine solid wood furniture keeps a resale and inheritance value that board furniture does not. A well-maintained carved Sheesham dining set can be refinished to look close to new decades later; an MDF set has no second life once the veneer lifts.
The question is not whether Chiniot furniture is expensive. It is whether you will pay once or three times.
