Short answer: to order custom furniture, measure the room and access route, choose a design and size, confirm the wood, finish and upholstery in writing, agree the lead time, and inspect the piece before delivery. Made-to-order solid wood furniture usually takes four to ten weeks, depending on size and carving.

Step 1: Measure the room and the route

  • Room length, width and ceiling height
  • Positions of windows, doors, switches, sockets and AC units
  • Every doorway, corridor, stair turn and lift the piece must pass through

Photograph the room from each corner. A maker can advise far better from photos than from dimensions alone.

Step 2: Choose the design and size

Start from an existing design rather than a blank page — it is faster and the proportions are already proven. Then adjust the size to your room. Common changes:

  1. Bed width and headboard height
  2. Dining table length and number of chairs
  3. Sofa length and seat depth
  4. Wardrobe width to fit a wall exactly

Step 3: Confirm the material in writing

Ask for the specification to state:

  • Wood — for example, solid Sheesham for all parts including hidden panels
  • Seasoning — kiln-dried, with a target of 8 to 12 percent moisture
  • Joinery — mortise and tenon or dowelled
  • Finish — colour name, and whether it is a polish or lacquer
  • Upholstery — fabric, colour and foam density

Step 4: Approve a finish sample

Screens change colour. Ask for a photo of the finish on real wood in daylight, and compare it with your floor and walls.

Step 5: Agree the timeline

Typical made-to-order lead times:

  • Tea trolley, mirror, nesting tables — about 3 to 4 weeks
  • Modern bed or sofa — about 4 to 6 weeks
  • Carved bedroom or dining set — about 6 to 10 weeks
  • Complete wedding package — about 8 to 12 weeks

Add two weeks in the October to February wedding season.

Step 6: Inspect before delivery

Ask for photos or a video of the finished piece before it leaves the workshop. Check carving, finish consistency, drawer movement and that the size matches the order.

Step 7: Plan the delivery

Confirm the delivery date, whether assembly is included, and who carries the piece upstairs. Clear the route and protect the floor.

Custom furniture goes wrong in the details nobody wrote down. Put every measurement, material and colour in writing, then check the finished piece against that list.
