How to Care for Sheesham Furniture in Pakistan’s Climate
A seasonal routine for solid Sheesham through Punjab summers, monsoon humidity and dry winters — polishing, placement, and the habits that prevent cracks.

Solid Sheesham is the most forgiving furniture timber you can own — but it is still a living material that breathes with the season. Furniture that survives forty years and furniture that splits in its third winter usually differ by a handful of habits, not by quality.
What actually damages Sheesham
Not scratches. Not spills, if you catch them. The three real enemies are:
- Rapid humidity swings — wood absorbs moisture in monsoon and releases it in dry winter. Fast
change across a wide panel is what opens a check or splits a joint.
- Direct sunlight — bleaches the surface unevenly and dries one face of a panel faster than the
other, which cups it.
- Direct heat and dry air — a heater or an air-conditioner blowing straight onto a piece does
in three months what a decade of normal use would not.
Placement rules
- Keep furniture at least 60 cm from a heater or an AC outflow
- Avoid a position where afternoon sun falls across a single panel; use a sheer curtain where the
window cannot be avoided
- Do not push large pieces flush against an exterior wall that gets damp — leave a 5 cm air gap
- Rotate runners, cloths and decor pieces every few months so the surface ages evenly
The weekly routine
Dust with a dry or barely damp soft cotton cloth, always along the grain. Dust is abrasive; a circular wipe with a dry gritty cloth is what puts fine scratches into a polished top over the years.
For carved panels and jaali work, a soft dry paintbrush lifts dust out of the relief far better than a cloth, which only packs it deeper into the cuts.
Polishing, and how often
A hand-rubbed natural polish needs feeding roughly twice a year — once before summer and once after monsoon:
- Clean the surface and let it dry completely.
- Apply a small amount of beeswax or a good furniture wax to a lint-free cloth.
- Work it along the grain in thin coats. Too much wax stays tacky and traps dust.
- Leave it 20 to 30 minutes, then buff hard with a clean dry cloth until nothing transfers.
Avoid silicone-based spray polishes. They give a fast shine, build a film that clouds over time, and make future refinishing difficult.
Spills, marks and water rings
Blot spills immediately — do not wipe, which spreads liquid into the grain. A water ring that is still white sits in the wax layer, not the wood, and usually lifts with a gentle wax reapplication. A dark ring means water has reached the timber, and that is a job for light sanding and refinishing.
Use coasters and a felt pad under anything hot. Sheesham is hard, but heat marks the finish, not the wood — and the finish is what you are protecting.
Seasonal checklist
- Before summer, March — polish, move anything sitting in direct sun, tighten loose bolts
- Monsoon, July and August — ventilate rooms, wipe condensation off surfaces, and never cover
pieces with plastic sheeting, which traps moisture against the wood
- After monsoon, October — second polish of the year, inspect joints and feet for damp
- Winter — keep heaters at distance; if you run one hard in a closed room, a bowl of water in
the room slows the drying out
When something does go wrong
Solid wood is repairable, and that is its quiet advantage over MDF. Scratches sand and re-polish. Loose mortise-and-tenon joints can be knocked apart, cleaned and re-glued. A cracked panel can be filled and refinished. Almost nothing on a solid Sheesham piece is a write-off, which is why everything in our collection is built with joinery that can be opened rather than glued shut forever.
Frequently asked
- How often should Sheesham furniture be polished?
- Twice a year suits most homes — once before summer and once after monsoon. Use beeswax or a quality furniture wax in thin coats along the grain, and avoid silicone spray polishes, which build a cloudy film.
- Why does wooden furniture crack in winter?
- Dry winter air pulls moisture out of the timber, and rapid drying across a wide panel opens checks. Keeping furniture away from direct heater airflow and slowing the humidity swing prevents almost all of it.
- Can scratches on Sheesham furniture be repaired?
- Yes. Because the piece is solid timber rather than veneer over MDF, surface scratches sand out and re-polish, and loose joints can be knocked apart and re-glued. Very little damage on solid Sheesham is permanent.
