Furniture List for a New House in Pakistan: A Room-by-Room Checklist

A complete furniture list for a new house — bedroom, drawing room, lounge, dining, entrance and verandah — split into what you need on day one and what can wait a year.

Short answer: a new house in Pakistan needs, at minimum, a bed with side tables and a wardrobe for each bedroom, a sofa set and centre table for the drawing room, a dining set, and a console or shoe cabinet at the entrance. Everything else — deewans, swings, tea trolleys, relaxing chairs and decor — can be added over the first year as you learn how you actually use the house.

Before you buy anything

  1. Measure every room, doorway, stair turn and lift.
  2. Mark windows, switches and AC units on a simple floor plan.
  3. Choose one wood tone for the whole house.
  4. Set a budget by room, spending most on bedrooms and the dining table.

Master bedroom

Day one:

  • Bed, king or queen to suit the room
  • Two side tables
  • Wardrobe, unless the room has fitted closets
  • Dressing console with mirror

Within a year:

Browse bedroom sets.

Other bedrooms

Day one: a bed, one side table and storage for each.

Within a year: a study table or dressing table where needed.

Drawing room

Day one:

  • Sofa set, typically 3+2+1+1 for seven guests
  • Centre table
  • Side tables

Within a year:

  • Tea trolley
  • Console with mirror
  • Carved wall panel or a pair of lamps

Family lounge / TV lounge

Day one: an L-shape sofa or a comfortable three-seater, and a TV console.

Within a year: nesting tables, a relaxing chair and a floor cushion or deewan for extra seating.

Dining room

Day one: a dining set — six seats suits most families, eight for larger households.

Within a year: a sideboard or crockery cabinet.

Entrance

Day one: a shoe cabinet or a narrow console.

Within a year: a mirror and a small bench.

Verandah, roof or lawn

Within a year: a wooden swing or a traditional deewan for evenings outside, placed under cover.

How to budget the first-day list

  • Bedrooms — about 40 to 45 percent of the furniture budget
  • Drawing room and lounge — about 30 to 35 percent
  • Dining — about 15 to 20 percent
  • Entrance and extras — the remainder
Furnish the rooms you use every day first, in good materials. A half-furnished house fills up naturally; a house filled at once with cheap furniture has to be emptied again.

Ordering tips for a new house

  1. Order bedroom furniture six to ten weeks before you move, because hand-made pieces are built to order.
  2. Schedule delivery after painting and flooring work are finished.
  3. Keep large pieces 5 cm off exterior walls that may still be drying out in a new building.
